Reading Reflection No. 3
1) In Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, the author undermines human judgment by showing decades of his research devoting to explaining human behavior through 'systems' of thought. Kahneman states that human judgment is not as predictable as it may seem when it comes to decision making. His research devises that humans act either instinctively and emotionally or more deliberately and logically. Kahneman attributes much of our decision-making ability to be entirely subconscious in the moment, essentially making it unnoticeable to us. His research uses psychological principles to explain neurological behavior and decision making we do every day.
2) I believe that Thinking, Fast and Slow connects with what we are learning in ENT3003 because it helps me as a reader understand more what drives human behavior. As a budding entrepreneur, anything that can give me insight into what a potential consumer will be thinking when making a decision about buying 'my product' versus another's will/would certainly catch my attention.
3) The exercise I would create would involve buyer behavior analysis. I would ask that a student would go to a store like the Dollar Store with five dollars. I would ask them to spend the money, but not before really knowing why they're spending the money. That is, I would want them to analyze what made them choose that/those thing/things instead of the things right next to it.
4) Something that really stood out to me about this book, but also both of the other books I've read from our reading lists, is that it taught me a lot about myself. Not specifically by giving me instructions, or something to look for in myself, but by providing very insightful words or knowledge based on research or individual experience of the authors that made me evaluate the way I do things. I wouldn't say I didn't expect that this book would make me think this way, but I didn't expect just how much of a step back I would take after reading it. A step back to really evaluate and analyze why I make decisions the way I do.
I believe reading Thinking, Fast and Slow is an important asset to have as an entrepreneur. The way it relates to marketing is beneficial for you to understand the consumers' needs for your business venture. I also liked the exercise you created and think it is helpful for students to analyze their buying behaviors to really understand themselves and their shopping patterns.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like this book was a really great read. Since entrepreneurs have to be so in touch with what humans think and feel in order to be successful this book definitely is important in understanding that behavior. It's also cool that the book made you think about yourself and your decisions.
ReplyDeleteI also read Thinking, Fast and Slow and found it to be very interesting read. He really did a great job on explaining what drives human behavior and their decision-making process. I like the exercise you set up because it really makes you think about the reasons you are purchasing something. Finding out why would be an interesting assignment to participate in.
