5A: Identifying Local Opportunities

1. "Sizzling reviews for a meatless burger"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1670DD4FC8830420?p=WORLDNEWS
The story is about a burger that contains no meat and how it has taken local Tampa Bay restaurants by storm. The problem presented in the story is how, with American meat consumption, greenhouse gas levels soar. I suppose that means it's our problem as people to deal with our environment, but the "Impossible Burger" eliminates the greenhouse gases by not using meat.

2. "Suit: Sirens injured ears"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1670DD4FB384A8E0?p=WORLDNEWS
The story is about a man who filed a lawsuit against a local fire department for its unnecessary overuse of sirens. The problem is the siren being too loud. The problem is on the fire department, as the doppler effect noises from sirens are impossible to miss in any city. In the story, the man lives too close to a fire department that overuses its sirens, and it diminishes his quality of life. Anyone who finds a siren to be unnecessarily loud should find this to be a problem, as it has surely affected anyone who lives near somewhat of an urban environment.

3. "Stand up for seniors under care"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1670DD4FB599E4B0?p=WORLDNEWS
The story is about elderly Floridians dying after hurricane Irma due to power outages in nursing homes causing air conditioning units and equipment to be rendered useless. The problem is the lack of funding for those running these nursing homes to be able to do their jobs properly in the situation that presented life or death consequences.

4. "Again, this is annoying"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1670DD4FC31FED40?p=WORLDNEWS
The article is about attendance at local sporting events being flooded by opposing team's fans. The problem is the apathy locals have for the sports teams, in addition to being how the teams are marketed to the locals. The problem is characterized by lack of morale among Bay Area sports team fans and poor leadership in the sports organizations themselves.

5. "A new security breach, and everyone shrugs"
http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1670DD4FB2DADC20?p=WORLDNEWS
The article is about cybersecurity plaguing the internet and how people are not only oblivious, but indifferent. The problem is hacking, and a lack of computer knowledge among the general population, namely Baby Boomers and older. The problem affects all those who keep information stored online, which seems to be everyone these days.

Comments

  1. I like the variety of topics in the articles you chose, some of the problems only affect a few people while others affect all of us. I would recommend giving more details on each of the problems and how it affected the people. Also, I would recommend adding some formatting to make it easier on the reader to read. Overall great work.
